Should we risk it?

Developers propose a casino for Downtown. But it would come at a cost.

By Stephanie Ramage

Underground Atlanta used to be the place you could go to get something you couldn’t get at most other places.

Its establishments served mixed drinks in the 1960s, when every Georgia county outside Fulton prohibited them. In the ’70s, it became a notorious haven for drug dealers and prostitutes.

Then it became just another galleria.

Underground Atlanta developers have received support of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin for their proposed lottery-tied casino at the downtown entertainment complex.

Underground developer Dan O’Leary told members of an Atlanta City Council subcommittee on Tuesday he has a letter of support from Franklin. Lottery’s secret plan for downtown gaming

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Here is another surprising article for all of you who follow the ongoing discussion of a possible Casino in Atlanta:

Georgia Lottery officials have been publicly silent about a proposal for a casino in downtown Atlanta. But privately, they have been actively exploring a casino since at least last spring.

Underground Atlanta developer Dan O’Leary on Jan. 13 disclosed a plan to build a half-billion-dollar, lottery-tied casino and hotel at the struggling downtown entertainment complex.

Documents obtained by Atlanta Business Chronicle show lottery officials have studied a casino since last May.

The Georgia Lottery commissioned a public relations strategy to sell a casino to lawmakers, business leaders and the public, the documents obtained through the Georgia Open Records Act show.

Do you feel lucky?

Monday, January 26th, 2009

In recent days, the “Do you feel lucky” phrase has been revived. The debate reaches back as far as 2003 when Fulton County Commissioner and former mayoral candidate Robb Pitts proposed legalized gambling in Atlanta. “Obviously, Underground Atlanta needs all the help it can get,” Pitts said. “It would be the savior of Underground Atlanta, quite frankly.”

Fast forward to 2009. Same location.

Dan O’Leary, one of the leaseholders of Underground, is refreshing the debate. “Developers of the entertainment center downtown believe they have the answer to turn things around. The developers are teaming with a Delaware based company to try and bring casino gambling to Georgia.
“We have been going around and meeting with the usual suspects of business, civic, and community leaders and we believe there’s a ground swell of support for this concept.”

This is where we come in. ATLCasino.com is impartial to supporting or protesting the gaming concept, but – we would like to hear from you. The User, Web Surfer, Atlantan.
